What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?

DBT comes from CBT originally, which has been around since the 60s. Both are talking therapies that aim to familiarise the therapist with your problems so that they can advise you on how to negotiate similar future situations in a healthier way. DBT differs from CBT because it was derived with the main focus of helping those with intense feelings to manage them in a healthy way.

There are certain types of mental health problem, such as OCD for example, where clients feel intensely that they must, must not, or cannot, do things. If left unchecked, this can affect every area of their life. In a similar way, an addict will feel terrible guilt, shame, and fear when they finally come through detox and into rehab. No matter what they were addicted to, they will be intensely frustrated that they let the problem escalate, as well as that they have neglected family and friends.

These feelings are intense enough to be completely overwhelming. When you get DBT sessions while you are in the rehab clinic, you are better equipped to negotiate these intense feelings in a healthy and productive way.

In the past, DBT has shown so effective that it can actually lower the rate of hospitalization in mental health patients. It mixes mindfulness with behavioural therapies, including dialectics on a scale that just hadn’t been thought of before. The treatments given were originally associated with gender studies, with findings proving that women were not as susceptible to BPD as was originally thought.

The History Behind DBT

Verve Health Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

So while we might understand how DBT is helpful to us, we still don’t know where it came from. Back in the 1960s, a psychiatrist working at the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Pennsylvania ran an experiment into depression. He sought simply to demonstrate that the principles we all accepted to be true of depression were still true. In fact, he discovered the opposite. That man was Dr Aaron Beck, the founder of CBT… the talking therapy from which DBT was derived.

A little over ten years later, in the late 70s, Dr Marsha Linehan was working as a suicide researcher. She developed DBT as a specialism of CBT that included mindfulness as a core principle.

What Problems does DBT in Rehab Help?

DBT was originally designed to be used in suicide prevention but was soon extended to be used with Bi-Polar Disorder. Great strides were made in this area before DBT was extended to include other areas. Nowadays, several studies have proven its efficacy as a talking therapy used in the treatment of addictions.

Here at Verve Health Rehab Clinic, we use DBT in a variety of ways. Some of the most common conditions we treat with it are as follows:

  • Depression, Anxiety, PTSD and OCD – all of these can find calmness by implementing mindfulness into their everyday actions.
  • Bi-polar disorder, body dysmorphia, Schizophrenia and other severe mental health problems can all benefit from examination of intense emotions through DBT.
  • Eating Disorders can be treated using Dialectic Behavioural Therapy.
  • Addictions, both substance abuse and behavioural addictions, can be treated this way. Those suffering from addictions are encouraged to examine past actions to spot triggers for their substance abuse disorders. Once identified, a plan of action can be put into place to avoid repeated substance misuse in future. Identifying the problem is half the battle, just as the saying goes.
  • Emotional issues, those who struggle with managing their feelings, and a variety of other cases can all benefit from this therapy type.
  • Suicidal persons will benefit from DBT. If you are feeling suicidal, stop reading and call your relevant doctor surgery or the NHS, right now. If you are seeking our help to avoid these feelings in future, then please do call us.

Whatever the reason you feel you need therapy; we are here to provide it for you. With Verve Health you have access to a calm sanctuary where you can recover from your addiction in full comfort and style.
